The IRTG1123 Annual Retreat 2026 took place at the Institute of Stroke and Dementia Research in München Großhadern.

 

Insights from the Graduate School CRC 1123 Retreat

The recent retreat of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1123 Graduate School, held on May 05-06, 2026, brought together cardiovascular science researchers and graduate students from the CRC1123.
The two-day event featured keynote lectures, interactive sessions, and presentations spanning diverse topics—from mechanisms of atherosclerosis to cutting-edge omics approaches in cardiovascular research. Graduate students presented innovative projects on immunothrombosis, neuro-vascular interfaces, and the influence of non-coding RNAs on heart disease. Keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Clément Cochain provided insights about TREM2+ macrophages in atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction.
A significant highlight of the retreat was the election of two shorttalk price winners: Federica Tosato and Michael Otabil, whose talks about The cardiovascular risk gene LRCH1 interacts with JAK-STAT pathway to promote chronic inflammation and the Role of the Atypical Chemokine Interactome in Atherosclerosis really stood out.

We would also like to thank our student representatives Aishvaryaa Prabhu from the Steffens Lab at the IPEK, Robin Dewender from the Massberg Lab, and Federica Tosato from the Dichgans Lab at the ISD for their continious efforts to support their student colleagues - as well as the graduate program coordinator on special occasions - over the past years. They have acted to strengthen student involvement in CRC 1123 activities, enhancing collaborative research and educational experiences.

We extend our gratitude to all participants for their outstanding presentations and stimulating discussions, which made the retreat a memorable and successful event.

Clément Cochain has a Junior Professor Chair for 'Multi-Organ Dysfunction and Cardiovascular Pathology in metabolic Diseases' at the Paris Cardiovascular Research Center (PARCC). The retreat was reserved for students and PIs of the Integrated Research Training Group, but the Keynote Lecture on 5 May 2026 has been open to all researchers and employees.
